Our Story
Have you ever wondered how the Tooth Fairy knows that you’ve lost a tooth or wondered why you receive a gift in exchange for it? Have you ever been curious about why you don’t wake up when the Tooth Fairy takes your tooth from under your pillow? Have you ever asked yourself, “What is the true story of the Tooth Fairy?” or “What does the Tooth Fairy do with all my teeth?” These are a few of the questions my children, Jessica and James, used to ask me. And as a dentist and a mother, I have always felt that the answers to all these beautiful questions should be explained.
Willow By Your Pillow was a journey I decided to take when my daughter’s first tooth started to erupt and became visible in her mouth. It began with the welcoming of our Fairy Messenger into our home. “Willow,” as we had named her, watched over Jessica daily. Each night, she would report to the Tooth Fairy when Jessica was fast asleep.
She’d recount many things to her, such as whether Jessica was eating healthy, behaving well, and, of course, brushing and flossing her teeth! Being a good Fairy Messenger, Willow would let the Tooth Fairy know when a tooth was getting loose and even help keep it safe inside her pocket, which was conveniently “by Jessica’s pillow,” until the Tooth Fairy arrived later that night.
The idea that Willow was constantly watching and engaging daily with the Tooth Fairy helped reinforce good brushing habits, better behaviors, and, importantly, healthier food choices in my children. Often, Willow’s friends River, Sparrow, Clover, Meadow, and Piper would stop by, too. Clover is actually James’ Fairy Messenger! The Fairy Messengers have different personalities and characteristics, which is why every child can personally relate to their own Fairy Messenger.
Our children learned quite early that the Tooth Fairy’s gift depended on the “quality” of the tooth “sugarbug-free,” and that their behaviors influenced her gift selection. This naturally motivated them to make great choices in life. Can you imagine your children wanting to brush their teeth, help out around the house, and actually eat healthy meals?
Incorporating the Fairy Messengers into our lives yielded great results. I became so pleased with our children’s improved motivation, knowledge, and self-worth that I decided that this notion must be shared with all. I hope your family falls in love with their very own Fairy Messengers and this tradition as much as our family has! I encourage you, the readers of this book, to continue to improve your overall dental health so that you have beautiful, radiating smiles forever.
Sending warm hugs and smiles to those who believe!
With love,
